The Business of Health Care Report
When was the last time you took your car in for a tune-up or oil change? How about an inspection? If you value the use of your vehicle, chances are you do these things regularly in order to keep it on the road.
Why not do the same for your health? Preventive maintenance is just as important for your body as it is for your car.
June 9 through 15 is National Men's Health Week, and I encourage employers to inform the men in your workforce about preventive measures they can take to stay healthy at any age.
To start, men should schedule a checkup and use the appointment to open a dialogue with their physicians about what screenings and tests are recommended for their age group and how often they should be tested.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, key screenings and tests for men include Body Mass Index, cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, prostate and colorectal screenings. Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening is also an important one-time test for men with a history of smoking.
In addition to getting recommended tests, it is critical for your employees to take preventive medicines if needed, such as aspirin to prevent heart disease. And as always, encourage your workers to eat a healthy diet, stay active and avoid smoking.
