Texas Health Resources has made a bold promise to transform healthcare in North Texas. One of the ways we intend to make good on that promise is by transforming the methods and delivery of health care. Our goal is to use innovative techniques to improve quality and patient safety and, at the same time, reduce costs.
In order to do this, we must consider new and different ways of utilizing our resources. Presbyterian Hospital of Plano has done just that by creating a comprehensive blood conservation and management program.
Presbyterian Hospital of Plano provides around-the-clock support for surgical patients seeking blood conservation and management as an alternative to blood transfusion. It is one of only two hospitals in North Texas to offer such a service.
Patients who are able to plan in advance for “bloodless” surgery receive pre-operative pharmaceuticals and supplements to boost hemoglobin levels in the blood by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. Then, during surgery, doctors and nurses use cell-salvage technology to collect, filter and return the patient’s own blood during or after surgery.
With growing concerns about blood-borne pathogens, this program delivers increased quality and safety of care to our patients while reducing cost. It also provides an alternative that can be used during shortages of banked blood.
