The Business of Health Care Report
Flu season is upon us, and our schools, businesses, homes and places of worship can be incubators for harmful germs. It’s not too late to get your flu shot. And it is never too late to become more vigilant about the single most important method of preventing the spread of infectious disease: washing your hands.
Hands are the primary mode of infectious disease transmission, especially among school children. Proper hand washing techniques are especially important this year because, in addition to influenza, our region is seeing a spike in the number of community-based, potentially fatal strains of antibiotic-resistant staph infections.
Did you know that the average person touches 300 surfaces in 30 minutes? This can allow for the transmission of viruses and bacteria. Viruses such as the flu increase health care costs and result in lost productivity.
Texas Health Resources emphasizes preventing the spread of infection both inside and outside our hospitals. Good Health Is In Your Hands, one of our key community health initiatives, is designed to inform people across North Texas about proper hand hygiene.
For more information about proper hand hygiene and its role in preventing infection, visit TexasHealth.org and click on “Hand Hygiene.”
