Doug Hawthorne, President and CEO of Texas Health Resources I'm Doug Hawthorne, President and CEO of Texas Health Resources, with "The Business of Health Care Report."

Last year THR began implementing the electronic health record, known as the EHR, at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano. A significant amount of research, time, energy and financial investment went into creating the EHR. Some people wonder why we have made such a significant investment.

Just as we’ve seen in other industries in recent years, the health care industry is adopting enterprise-wide information technology to improve operations and control costs by making critical information available quickly and accurately. We believe this is a wise investment that will help us to improve patient safety and quality of care.

The EHR marks the beginning of a new era in health care, starting at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano and continuing across North Texas in all THR hospitals.

The EHR will not transform health care overnight. Implementation takes time, and there are hurdles we must overcome, because health care is a very complex and interactive environment.

In the near future, we will see organized, electronic patient information that is immediately accessible at every touch-point in the patient’s health care journey, from the doctor’s office to the hospital room to the operating suite to the skilled nursing unit and the pharmacy.

Then our caregivers can devote even more time to their true calling – caring for patients.

For Texas Health Resources and its faith-based hospitals – Harris Methodist, Presbyterian and Arlington Memorial – I’m Doug Hawthorne.
