The Business of Health Care Report
Tis the season to be jolly but not everyone will be jolly this season. According to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, a survey of more than 3,000 women found that 44 percent experienced partner violence. Men and children can be victims, too.
Given the added financial and emotional stresses, the problem is likely to become more prevalent during the holidays. It can spill over into other areas, including the workplace. Family violence costs businesses $5 to $10 billion annually including lost productivity and, the heaviest cost of all replacing employees who die as a result.
To help, Texas Health Resources has developed a toolkit to help
companies set up programs similar to our Family Violence Prevention program. It helps employers deal with this issue
head-on and at the one area victims may feel most secure their workplace. The program includes training segments to
help managers identify and counsel possible victims, templates for informational fliers and brochures, and access
to a cost calculator.
