The Business of Health Care Report
Anyone who’s been hospitalized knows that a good nursing staff makes the experience more pleasant. Nurses often are the ones who comfort and monitor us and the ones we go to first with questions. That’s why we honor them during Nurses’ Week in May. It’s our chance to formally thank them for their hard work and show our appreciation.
The Dallas-Fort Worth area is privileged to have 39,000 nurses working in health care. Texas Health Resources employs 5,800 of those nurses – and I’m proud to report that 34 of the recently announced Great 100 Nurses from our area are THR nurses.
Many of our nurses expand their roles to serve outside of the health care walls. Nurses volunteer for community fairs and school programs. At THR, we have several who serve as Faith Community Nurses, nurses who work within their faith communities to provide resources, counseling and – sometimes – just a person to listen when health problems arise.
It is a job with many ups and downs, from the joy of the birth of a child to the sorrow that accompanies the death of a long-term patient.
I applaud the dedication and care our nurses provide. It is indeed a calling, and we are blessed that you chose and choose to remain in such a crucial profession.
