Red hearts are everywhere this month. Have you had a chance to get a glimpse at yours? I don’t mean a literal picture but an assessment of your heart’s condition. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and costs Texans billions of dollars annually. If you manage a business, you know these statistics are one of the reasons health insurance is more costly.

Heart disease isn’t always obvious. Not everyone with heart disease will have a heart attack. Some will only feel exhaustion, and others may have no symptoms until their heart just stops.

It’s also a disease usually compounded with risk for stroke or diabetes. Yet by incorporating lifestyle changes, heart disease can be preventable. Is your company helping your employees live a healthier lifestyle?

Simple things like offering a bowl of fruit in break rooms or healthy snack alternatives in vending machines can help employees by giving them choices.

As part of our Be Healthy THR program, we have a walking track around our parking lot for employee workouts during the day. We also offer dietary and exercise tips to encourage healthier lifestyles.

Heart health is important. Take time in February – Heart Health Month – to see what can be done to lessen health care costs for you and your employees.

For Texas Health Resources and its faith-based hospitals – Harris Methodist, Presbyterian and Arlington Memorial – I’m Doug Hawthorne.
