Seven thousand children die from sudden cardiac arrest per year. In fact, the American Heart Association lists cardiovascular disease as the No. 3 cause of death for children under the age of 15. One way to prevent these unnecessary deaths is through early intervention in the first three minutes of cardiac arrest with an automated external defibrillator. Frequently called AEDs, these laptop-computer sized devices measure the heart’s rhythm for abnormalities and deliver electrical shocks that can help the heart regain an effective rhythm. Harris Methodist H-E-B Hospital saw a need in the community and took action. The hospital purchased 19 AEDs and donated them to high schools in Northeast Tarrant County and to Tarrant County College Northeast. In addition to the AEDs, the hospital donated the mounted wall cabinets, training, maintenance and regular updates. The donation is just one example of Texas Health Resources’ commitment to our communities. Our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve goes beyond treating our patients within our facilities. Even if these A-E-Ds are never used, the knowledge that they’re available will provide parents, students, coaches and other school personnel the peace of mind that they can respond when necessary.
