Doug Hawthorne, President and CEO of Texas Health Resources I'm Doug Hawthorne, President and CEO of Texas Health Resources, with "The Business of Health Care Report."

Texas leads the nation in the number of uninsured. Earlier this month, I described what happens when those without insurance forgo vital preventive care – something as simple as a yearly checkup. Today, I want to outline what we all can do to answer the pressing health care needs of our communities.

First, commit personally to a healthy lifestyle. Honor your health by finding a way to get a yearly health exam. Texas Health Resources’ Web site – TexasHealth.org – offers information about tests and physicals you may need in the Health Risk Assessment section. THR hospitals and others throughout the Metroplex provide health fairs that offer various screenings. Check your local newspaper’s event calendar for listings.

Second, talk with your neighbors and colleagues about the importance of health insurance. Raise awareness in your community about the plight of the uninsured. If your employer does not provide health insurance, ask him or her to visit the Cover the Uninsured Week Web site – at covertheuninsuredweek.org – for resources and information on health insurance.

Finally, if your family does not have health insurance, you may be eligible for assistance. Call TexCare at 1-800-647-6558, that’s 1-800-647-6558, for information about the Texas Children’s Health Insurance and Medicaid programs.

For Texas Health Resources and its faith-based hospitals – Harris Methodist, Presbyterian and Arlington Memorial – I’m Doug Hawthorne.
