The Business of Health Care Report
Today’s topic is the importance of
philanthropy in health care.
There’s been considerable
discussion lately of the growing problem of uninsured Americans. The problem is
especially acute in Texas, where more than one in four working Texans is uninsured.
The resulting $21 billion in charity care provided by U.S. hospitals means that
philanthropy is needed more than ever to fill the gaps – especially as hospitals
attempt to expand facilities to meet growing demand. For nonprofit hospitals, which
receive very limited financial help from state and local governments for providing care
to low-income populations, philanthropy is the financial bridge. Texas Health Resources has three foundations, the Harris Methodist Health Foundation, the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation and Presbyterian Village North Foundation, which build relationships with the community. Through partnership with committed donors, the foundations enhance the delivery of care by providing financial support for new facility construction, medical research, education and technology. More than half of the money raised by the foundations has gone to hospital improvements and community services. But the true measure of an
organization is a commitment to its own cause. With that in mind, Texas Health Resources
launched a program called THR Associates, in which employees voluntarily donate a
portion of their paychecks to give back to the organization. Just since April 1, THR
employees and senior managers have contributed almost $450,000. Without a doubt, one of the greatest expressions of humanity is the willingness to help others – a goal taken to heart every day at Texas Health Resources, where the mission is to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve. Now, perhaps more than ever, that mission is impacted by philanthropy and by others sharing this vision. For Texas Health Resources
and its family of hospitals - Harris Methodist Hospitals, Presbyterian
Healthcare System and Arlington Memorial Hospital - I'm CEO
