The Business of Health Care Report
Since May 9-15 is National Hospital and Healthcare Week, today I’d like to focus attention on hospitals and their role in our communities. There are lots of places that draw
us together – even in our fast-paced world. A visit to any popular shopping mall on a Saturday
can make you wonder where all these people came from. A ballpark on a sunny afternoon can overflow with the young and the old. And certainly our places of worship bring people together from all walks of life. There’s another spot that brings people together in sickness and in health: hospitals. Hospitals are considered vital to those communities fortunate enough to have them. For classes that teach us to stay well, or how to prepare for childbirth, or for an exercise regimen, hospitals can be a fun place to go. But a hospital can also be the last
place many of us want to see. Like electricity, hospitals spend much of their time in the background of our lives. They’re there when we need them, and that’s what matters. They are part of what makes communities tick – essential services that keep things humming along – so that we can go about our lives and tend to our businesses. But all it takes is one traumatic event – one sick or injured child or one sick employee, for example – to focus us like a laser beam on our hospital. It’s not something anyone likes to think about, but each of us is one illness or one episode away from a major life change. Hospitals, fortunately, are there for us when trouble comes. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, they stand ready to help us through some of life’s most difficult moments. So, as we celebrate Hospital and Healthcare Week, it’s a perfect time to acknowledge the impact of hospitals on the health of our communities. They may never quite match shopping malls as favorite places to go, but at least for one week a year, we should acknowledge hospitals’ value in our lives. For Texas Health Resources
