The Business of Health Care Report
Today, it is my pleasure to honor the
thousands of volunteers who support the caring mission of America's hospitals in advance
of National Volunteers Week. Since the beginning of modern-day
health care, volunteers have been a vital part in caring for America. Often, volunteers at
hospital information desks are the first smiling faces that greet a patient or family member.
They deliver beautiful flowers, balloons or cards to brighten a patient's day. They are
important members of the patient-care team, working in support roles on hospital floors
in surgery and emergency waiting rooms as needed. And, they provide behind-the-scenes
support for hospital departments including the business office, food service and many more. According to the American Hospital
Association, studies indicate that volunteering is good for your mental and physical health.
In today's high- tech world, many people are finding that the high-touch world of volunteering
is the perfect antidote. Health care volunteers are diverse. They
are multicultural and multilingual. They are young, middle-aged and seniors. They come from
a wide variety of occupations, many who have been healed or inspired by the skill of health
professionals. Hospitals also often have junior volunteer
programs, providing young people the perfect opportunity to experience health care as they
consider their future career choices. This year marks the 30th anniversary of
National Volunteer Week. I want to personally thank the more than seventeen hundred volunteers
who are part of the Texas Health Resources' team and countless others in the Dallas/Fort Worth
Metroplex who give of themselves to help others. Each of these wonderful people deserves our
heartfelt thanks. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering at a hospital, please

and its family of hospitals - Harris Methodist Hospitals, Presbyterian
Healthcare System and Arlington Memorial Hospital - I'm CEO
