The Business of Health Care Report
Today's report focuses on a newly
created position at Texas Health Resources - one that emphasizes the importance of
health care quality - and why physicians are playing larger roles in the leadership
of the company. Dr. Michael Deegan, who has more
than 35 years of health care experience, is the company's new chief quality officer.
Dr. Deegan has worked in a variety of settings, including clinical practice, health
care administration and consulting. Before his move to the Metroplex, he led a firm
that specialized in improving health care delivery in areas such as quality, performance
improvement and patient safety. Dr. Deegan also has a strong record
of providing physician leadership, including his role as the regional chief medical
officer in the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Mich., and as senior vice president
for medical affairs at Providence Hospital and Medical Center in Southfield, Mich. Dr. Deegan joins Chief Medical
Information Officer Dr. Ferdinand Velasco as recent physician additions to the Texas
Health Resources leadership team. It's no coincidence that physicians were sought for
both of these positions. With Dr. Deegan and Dr. Velasco now on staff, THR has a potent
one-two quality punch to support the hospitals' mission to improve the health of the
people in the communities we serve and to reinvigorate a commitment to clinical quality
improvement. Texas Health Resources always has
been a quality organization, but its quality quest is shifting into a higher gear.
Everything done to improve patient care - from redesigns of hospital rooms and patient
gowns to improvements in medical and information technology - strengthens the overall
quality of health care. Dr. Deegan now joins that effort -
as all of us in health care make quality our number one priority. For Texas Health Resources
and its family of hospitals - Harris Methodist Hospitals, Presbyterian
Healthcare System and Arlington Memorial Hospital - I'm CEO
