The Business of Health Care Report
Today, I'd like to discuss the state of Texas Health Resources,
the health care market leader in North Texas as represented by Harris Methodist, Presbyterian and Arlington Memorial
hospitals. A founding principle of the organization is that as a faith-based,
nonprofit health system, THR is an asset of the communities it serves, stewards of their needs and care, and accountable
with them to improve health and strengthen communities. As such, 2002 was an excellent year for Texas Health Resources.
More than one in five Metroplex-area residents came to a THR hospital for care, accounting for more than 130,000 inpatient
admissions. In addition, more than 1 million outpatients and some 440,000 of those seeking emergency services sought help
at a THR hospital. In April, the board of trustees approved a four-year strategic plan
called the Blueprint for Health Care Delivery. It outlines improvements in quality delivery, patient and guest services,
technology; building improvements; and new clinical and surgical settings coming to high-growth communities across the
Metroplex. It also calls for investments of more than $1 billion in improving and expanding hospitals to serve community
needs. As one of the largest employers in the area, THR pumped $530 million
in payroll into the Metroplex, with more than $181 million in goods and services purchased locally. More than $1.5 million and an estimated 40,000 hours of community
service were given to improve the health of people in the communities THR served by employees, physicians on the medical
staffs and volunteers. And an ambitious new Web site, TexasHealth.org, was launched to
give consumers more tools for managing their health and keeping informed. Thank you, Metroplex, for allowing Texas Health Resources to serve
you and improve health in your communities. For Texas Health Resources
and its family of hospitals - Harris Methodist Hospitals, Presbyterian
Healthcare System and Arlington Memorial Hospital - I'm CEO Doug
