The Business of Health Care Report
Last year I discussed the varying ways
groups within the Metroplex were trying to measure and report on health care quality.
Today, it's my pleasure to introduce Annette Anderson, vice president for Clinical Outcomes
and Process Improvement at Texas Health Resources, to bring you a quality update. ANNETTE: Thank you, Doug. I'm happy to report that groups with an
interest in quality and patient safety have moved from drawing lines in the sand to drafting
approaches to cooperate. The Dallas Fort Worth Business Group on Health has advocated that
its members adopt the three initiatives proposed by the national Leapfrog Group. At first, these initiatives seemed to be
set in stone, leaving little room for hospitals and others to provide input. Today, Texas
Health Resources and representatives from other hospital systems are meeting with large
employers to meet the spirit of these initiatives. Nationally, several organizations have
agreed on overall guidlines around which hospitals and other providers will provide data for
a public report. These groups include the American Hospital Association, the American Medical
Association, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, the Agency
for Healthcare Research and Quality - AHRQ - and others. At the state level, the Texas Health Care
Information Council continues to collect and report data on inpatient hospital encounters and
health care prevention initiatives. The agency also collects data related to AHRQ's patient
safety indicators and may, at a future date, publish a report. Texas Health Resources continues to support
the reporting of timely, accurate and meaningful information that helps consumers make informed
decisions. Patients are encouraged to evaluate each source and to discuss all information with
their physicians. For Texas Health Resources
and its family of hospitals - Harris Methodist Hospitals, Presbyterian
Healthcare System and Arlington Memorial Hospital - I'm CEO
