The Business of Health Care Report
Today, I will discuss the importance
of a family friendly work environment. Especially in today's economic climate
where it often takes dual incomes to make family-ends meet, companies that place an emphasis
on family well being attract the choice employees. THR's own employee research indicates that
work environment ranks well above financial compensation when it comes to employee
retention. That's why I'm particularly proud of
a recent award received by the employees of Texas Health Resources. In their annual search for the most
family friendly Dallas-Fort Worth companies, researchers at Dallas Child and Fort Worth
Child magazines picked THR this May for their first-ever Most Innovative Company award.
The magazine's staff selected THR based on the strength of its corporate culture, which
emphasizes education, professional development, compensation, benefits and community
service. THR has several employee-focused
programs, including tuition reimbursement for employees and their dependents who pursue
clinical degrees, a Spirituality and Health Council, financial adoption assistance, a
transition retirement program that allows workers over the age of 55 to work part-time
while keeping full-time medical benefits, and enhanced benefits for active military
reservists. In addition, time off with pay is
offered to employees who volunteer in their communities, and child care centers and a
sick-child care center are available. THR also makes a concerted effort to include
families of employees at key milestone company events. Focusing on employees, their
families and a supportive healthy environment is more than a business strategy - it's
part of THR's mission of improving community health. For Texas Health Resources
and its family of hospitals - Harris Methodist Hospitals, Presbyterian
Healthcare System and Arlington Memorial Hospital - I'm CEO
