The Business of Health Care Report
Today, it's my pleasure to introduce
Dave Ashworth, executive vice president for strategy and system development at THR, who
will discuss the value of health care systems coming together to improve community health. DAVE: Thank you, Doug. Partnerships are becomingly increasingly
common in health care. For the most part, their popularity stems from a need to provide
cost-effective health care access to growing communities. A case in point is the recent announcement
that a new hospital will soon be built in Denton. The Presbyterian Hospital of Denton will
result from a collaboration between Arlington-based Texas Health Resources and Plano-based
Triad Hospitals. The unusual aspect of this partnership is that THR is a nonprofit health care
system, while Triad operates for-profit hospitals. THR's Blueprint for Health Care Delivery
targeted Denton as an area with growing health care needs. Triad already had a facility in
the community, but was looking for an opportunity to build a new hospital and update the
current facility. This project is a good example of how
THR approaches decisions about partnerships. Each project is evaluated on its own merits.
Decisions are made on the basis of what is best for the organization and if collaboration
helps us achieve our mission of improving the health of the people in the communities we
serve. THR also has formed partnerships with
physicians, most recently in Southlake and Plano, because physicians are seeking more ways
to be directly involved in the way facilities are run and managed - especially those providing
services to their patients. Because capital resources are limited and
must be used in the wisest manner, North Texans should know that THR will continue to evaluate
opportunities to develop projects with other partners based on community needs. For Texas Health Resources
and its family of hospitals - Harris Methodist Hospitals, Presbyterian
Healthcare System and Arlington Memorial Hospital - I'm CEO
