The Business of
Health Care Report
The facts, provided by Carter BloodCare, are startling. Every three seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Each year, more than 4 million Americans require blood transfusions. Locally, 400 people need blood every day. Meeting the transfusion needs of our area takes 800 volunteer donors every day. There is no substitute for blood. The only source is other caring human beings willing to donate this precious gift of life. Unfortunately, only 5 percent of healthy Americans eligible to donate blood actually do so each year. Hospitals experience the critical need
for blood every day. Accident victims, people undergoing surgery and patients receiving
treatment for leukemia, cancer or other diseases -- they all need blood. Every year, many
of the Texas Health hospitals sponsor blood donation drives. These collection efforts result
in hundreds of units of blood being donated by Texas Health employees. Any company, community organization, place
of worship, or individual may contact their local blood collection centers to organize and host
blood drives. The need for blood is constant, and volunteer blood donors contribute nearly all
the blood used for patient care in the United States. Donating blood is fast, simple, and safe,
and most importantly, it saves lives. According to Carter, anyone who is in good health, at
least 17 years of age and weighs at least 110 pounds may donate blood every 56 days. For more information on the need for blood,
or to make an appointment to donate blood, contact Carter BloodCare, the American Red Cross or
other community blood donation centers listed in the Yellow Pages. Sources: Carter Bloodcare For Texas Health Resources
