The Business of Health Care Report
Today, I want to offer a special holiday message to the community on
behalf of the 16,000 employees, 4,000 medical staff physicians and 1,500 volunteers of Harris Methodist Hospitals,
Presbyterian Healthcare System and Arlington Memorial Hospital. Especially at this time of year, many of us tend to think a little
more about the state of the world around us. For some, it's the spiritual nature of the season that fosters this awareness.
But I suspect that the human condition, itself, needs occasional periods of heightened awareness, independent of religious
or spiritual inclinations. Much of the past year will be remembered as a time of great uncertainty.
Terrorism, the economy and threats of war will be forever linked to 2002. But bubbling just beneath the surface are the
highlights of our communities' strengths: a continuing resolve to work together, stronger patriotism and community involvement. That last point is my take-away message today. If we have learned anything
from 2002, it is that building stronger communities is the one thing that can make almost everything better. If we want a safer and healthier world, start by making our communities
safer and healthier. If we want a stronger national economy, start by making the most of our local economies. If we want
community involvement, get involved. And I'm proud to say that Texas Health Resources employees donated more than 40,000
hours of community service in 2002. It may sound simplistic, but the best solutions usually are. We do live in a complex and troubled world. But, we owe it to ourselves,
and to our nation, to do something when and where we can. For Texas Health Resources
and its family of hospitals - Harris Methodist Hospitals, Presbyterian
Healthcare System and Arlington Memorial Hospital - I'm CEO Doug
