The Business of Health Care Report
The Impact of Healthcare on the Metroplex - April 2002
(Rebroadcast From May 2001)

Doug Hawthorne, President and CEO of Texas Health Resources I'm Doug Hawthorne, President and CEO of Texas Health Resources, with "The Business of Health Care Report" on News Radio 1080 KRLD. Today's topic is the economic impact of health care on the Metroplex.

We chose this topic in celebration of National Hospital Week in May, since 40% of the health care industry in our nine-county metropolitan area work in hospitals.

Depending on how "health care" is defined, it ranks from first to third in making the most economic impact on the area. It's one of the three H's: health care, hospitality and high tech. More than 200,000 are employed in this industry locally. Among the attractiveness of the health care landscape in North Texas is its diversification. It's very broad across distribution, technology, research and development, education and all delivery segments of the industry-such as physicians' offices, radiology clinics and hospitals.

Health care is a $60 billion dollar business here, with the fastest growing segment for those who administer direct patient care. Forty percent of the health care industry in the nine counties are employed in 79 hospitals of all types with a total of more than 16,000 beds. We have general acute care hospitals like Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and Arlington Memorial. There are specialty hospitals for children's care, psychiatric care and rehabilitation.

There are county hospitals like Parkland and John Peter Smith. Government hospitals like the Veterans' Administration. And medical schools like the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth.

Biotechnology is believed to be the economic boom for the area's future, tying closely to high tech growth.

Texas Health Resources salutes the 200,000 employees working in health care: caring for the patient, searching for tomorrow's cures to disease and strengthening our economy locally for an overall improved quality of life.

For Texas Health Resources and its family of hospitals - Harris Methodist Hospitals, Presbyterian Healthcare System and Arlington Memorial Hospital - I'm CEO Doug Hawthorne with "The Business of Health Care Report" on NewsRadio 1080 KRLD.
