The Business of Health Care Report
Chaplains and the Faith-Based Organization - March 2002

Doug Hawthorne, President and CEO of Texas Health Resources I'm Doug Hawthorne, President and CEO of Texas Health Resources, with "The Business of Health Care Report" on News Radio 1080 KRLD. Today's subject is chaplains and their role in a faith-based organization.

As a faith-based organization, Texas Health Resources' primary focus is to care for the whole person (body, mind & spirit) reflective of God's healing presence. Our Pastoral Care Department is comprised of 30 full- and part-time chaplains, as well as 80 volunteer chaplains. In addition, each one of our 13 hospitals and our corporate office has a chapel on-site.

The chapels serve as places of worship and celebration, as well as a sanctuary for individual prayer and reflection for all faiths. Our chaplains lead worship services in the chapels, consult with patients, families, employees, physicians and volunteers and are available at all of our hospitals 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

As the events of September 11 unfolded, chaplains were dispatched to every corner of our organization to help people deal with the tragedy. That day, a worship service was held in every THR chapel, followed by a communal worship service on Sept. 14. In addition, chaplains were available around-the-clock for anyone in need.

Being faith-based also gives us the opportunity to explore spirituality and the healing process. THR has a Spirituality and Health Council, whose purpose is to "promote and cultivate an environment that nurtures the Holy in life." Our chaplains at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas also work through the inter-faith Attending Clergy Association to provide local clergy with continuing education, to integrate them into the health care team and promote spiritual health in the community.

Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital offers a Clinical Pastoral Education Program. This program provides training for clergy who want to enhance their pastoral skills in a clinical setting.

Chaplains are vital to the caregiving team, as counselors to employees and as a vital link to faith for patients and family.
