The Business of
Health Care Report I offer a special holiday message to the business community on behalf of the 15,000 employees and 5,000 medical staff physicians of Harris Methodist Hospitals, Presbyterian Healthcare System and Arlington Memorial Hospital. Greeting cards received this time of year often refer to "the spirit of the season." Maybe it's a personal definition, but I'm very encouraged by the high spirits of patriotism, caring, generosity and love we have seen evidenced during the past few months in the Metroplex. Companies brought in chaplains and psychologists to provide grief and counseling support to employees. Churches saw citizens returning to their faiths for strength, forgiveness and solace. Carter Blood Center had to turn away blood donors. Shelves in food pantries were nearing empty, and churches and companies responded. Texas Health Resources employees alone donated more than 50,000 food items in a one-month drive. Firemen on street corners asked us to fill the boot to aid fallen police and firemen in New York. And the Red Cross and Salvation Army were overwhelmed with generosity, volunteers and contributions to provide their services. And let's not forget the hallmark of cooperation for improving our communities, the United Way drive support from the business community. There's no lack of spirit in the Metroplex. The good news is that our true spirit is not just of this season but all year long. It has been our pleasure to sponsor The Business of Health Care Report during 2001, and we look forward to continue creating an atmosphere of understanding about health care issues in 2002. If you have comments on health care or suggestions for topics to be addressed on this program, e-mail me at DougHawthorne@TexasHealth.org. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.
